After-School Activities

Broadview-Thomson K8 (BTK8) offers a variety of before and after school activities which are sponsored directly by the school, or independent contractors that are secured by the BTK8 PTA, or the Bitter Lake Community Center (BLCC) in conjunction with Seattle Parks Department.  Some activities require a registration/supply fee.

The BTK8 PTA communicates with our families to provide the activities information so parents/guardians and the school community can plan accordingly.  NOTE:  Parents/guardians need to work directly with the activity provider to secure their students’ spots and make registration payment for their students.

Below is a list of activities planned for Winter 2017.  Look for flyers coming home or see details below on how to register.

Art/Creativity/Music-Focused Activities

Art Wizards:

Grades: 1 to 5

Meeting Times: Friday, 2:30 to 3:30 PM

Room: 225  (Art Room)

Description: The Art Wizards curriculum has been designed to teach children the skills of fine art while keeping them excited and encouraged to improve. With our class structure, students can see the progress they make, so they remain enthusiastic and motivated. Using a variety of media, (oil and chalk pastels, watercolor, pencil, charcoal and ink) children learn to see the way that artists do, and have fun with individualized, non-competitive lessons.

Chess Club:

Grades: 1 to 6

Meeting Times: Tuesday, 2:45 to 3:45 PM

Fee: $130 for school year. Students qualified for Free or Reduced Lunch have fee waived.

Description: This is a club that teaches students to play chess for fun, as well as how to compete in a chess tournament.

Description: Do you play games and wonder how they are created?  Would you like to build your own computer programs?  Come learn how at the Coding with Kids Academy!  In this fun after-school class, BEGINNERS will be introduced to the core concepts of computer programming, including loops, conditionals and variables.  INTERMEDIATE students will move on to more advanced concepts, such as nest conditionals and functions with parameters. Using the SCRATCH development environment, you will learn how to create a variety of programs, from simple animations to multi-level games.  With new projects each session, you will be able to express your creativity and advance as a coder!

Description: Jump start your child’s STEAM education with Coding with Kids’ Little Coders class!  Students will develop their computational thinking skills and build their own creative programs. Our curriculum combines a blend of fun activities – both “on-screen” and “off-screen” – to keep students engaged and excited about coding.  This class will give students a strong foundation on coding basics, such as loops and conditionals, that can be built upon in our other classes.  Kids will be introduced to these programming fundamentals in a variety of ways appropriate for this age group, from coding puzzles and board games to hands-on programming using online drag-and-drop tools such as Scratch (scratch.mit.edu).

Cub Scouts

Grades: K to 5

Meeting Times: Pack Meetings (K-5) are the last Tuesday of the month, at 6:30 PM. Den Meetings (individual grades) are arranged for a time and place by the families of that den.

Description: Cub Scouts experience outdoor adventures and other life skills, and have a lot of fun in the process. The program also emphasizes values such as being trustworthy, loyal, helpful, thrifty, brave and more.

Description: We make it our mission to spark imaginative learning! Mad science is the leading science enrichment provider for children in kindergarten through to grade 6. We deliver unique, hands-on science experiences to children. During after-school programs, children engage in exciting hands-on activities, watch spectacular demonstrations, participate in inquiry-based discussions and take home things that they have made themselves like model rockets, periscopes, Mad Science putty, and more! Our hands-on, one-hour science programs are themed around a particular area of science and include such topics as electricity, magnetism, optics, biology and many more.
