Welcome Back Bulldogs!

Summer is winding down and the first day of school is just around the corner. The teachers and staff at Broadview Thomson K-8 can’t wait to meet new students and catch up with all of those returning this year. This is going to be a fantastic year! Broadview Thomson has a new principal, RJ Sammons. Principal Sammons comes to us from North Beach Elementary and is very excited about moving forward with our school. I can tell you personally that I have spoken with parents this summer from North Beach Elementary and they are very sad to see Principal Sammons leave! I am including a letter Principal Sammons wrote to students and parents at the end of this back to school update. Other exciting news is in regards to Broadview Thomson’s Playground Improvement Project! We have officially signed a contract with Barker Landscape Architects. Hold your hats for more updates and opportunities to volunteer for this project. Together we can make our school a fun-tabulous place for our kids!

Important Dates/Times to note:

Please read the attached Welcome Letter from our new principal, RJ Sammons.

4)  Please join us Tuesday, September 2nd to meet and greet teacher’s from 4-4:20 and popsicles on the playground starting at 4:20pm and ending at 5pm.

And now for a few words from our Principal:

Dear Broadview Thomson families,

Hello Bulldogs!  I am honored to serve as your new principal and hope that you continue to enjoy our last days of summer vacation!  I kept busy by trying to keep our three kids busy, so I am anxious to get back to our school year routines. :) I also spent time in the building since we hosted two summer school programs…but I was able to find time to relax and refresh.  I was able to meet some of you during my transition last spring and I look forward to meeting all new and current families at our back to school open house on Tuesday September 2nd at 4:00pm.  You will be able to briefly visit your child’s classroom and then join us on the playground around 4:20 for popsicles and play-I hope to see you there!

I am set to enter my 5th year as a principal within Seattle Public Schools and I love my job!  I served the last four years as principal of North Beach Elementary which was a great experience but I wanted to seek leadership opportunities that required two things: A Middle School component and a diverse learning community—what a match!  I have partnered with Broadview Thomson over the past two years where we planned and aligned our resources and instruction along with sharing Professional Development trainings.  The dedication by our Broadview Thomson staff is unmatched and I look forward to working with them and partnering with you on our collective work as a Pre K8 learning community.

We have some new additions and shifts to our learning community, so please help welcome them into their new roles –you might notice a theme:

Lindsey Lippert: 6th grade Math –Mrs. Lippert previously taught 3rd and 4th grade at North Beach Elementary
Dee Jones: 3rd / 4th grade-Mrs. Jones previously taught 4th grade at North Beach Elementary
Michele Amato: Technology-Ms. Amato previously taught 5th grade at North Beach Elementary
Ruth Duplantis: Preschool-Mrs. Duplantis previously taught Transitional Kindergarten at North Beach Elementary
Lisa Busalacchi: K-5 Math Specialist-Ms. Busalacchi previously taught 3rd grade at Broadview
Matt McGavick: Leave replacement substitute for Mrs. Harris 3rd grade.  Mr. McGavick served in many teaching roles at North Beach while I was principal so I am fully confident that he is an effective replacement while Mrs. Harris is on maternity leave through January.
Tino Castaneda: Assistant Principal –Joins us from Eckstein Middle School
Karmen Nordhougen: Assistant Principal-Joins us from Lafayette Elementary

With new leadership often comes change.  That said, we will not accept any parent teacher requests/changes for the 2014-2015 school year.  If you would like to discuss your child’s placement then you can schedule a meeting with me  after October 1st rjsammons@seattleschools.org Also, please do not contact individual teachers. Teachers have collaborated and created balanced classes that need to be honored.

We will start our first morning off with announcements and launch into our opening day assembly! Our Kindergartners will have their own assembly when they start on September 8th!

Families should receive their information packet along with their child’s teacher by August 30th.  We have spent countless hours planning and balancing classes throughout last spring and this summer.  Classroom assignments are final due to the complexity of the process, but again, I am willing to meet with parents regarding any concerns and or placement questions after October 1st.

I am so excited for this upcoming school year and look forward to working with you to help ensure a challenging and supportive…and fun, learning environment for all of our Bulldogs J

The  PTA organizes parents, teachers, and staff to make your school a better place for your children to learn by addressing the needs of their individual schools. Identifying such needs may lead to solutions on making the school safe, becoming more technologically advance, and bringing enriched educational opportunities to the school. PTA provides a venue for parents to contribute to student success.
